Wine Fridge Buying Guide: Which One Should You Choose?
Choosing a wine fridge comes down to four questions: how many bottles, what for, where it goes and how many zones. This guide helps you decide, then compare models.
1. How many bottles?
Count the bottles you have, add a year of purchases and leave some room. Rated capacities usually assume slim 750 ml Bordeaux-style bottles: Burgundy, Champagne or magnum bottles take more space and reduce the real count.
- Up to 60 bottles: small wine fridges
- 60 to 200 bottles: mid-size wine fridges
- Over 200 bottles: large wine fridges
2. Aging or serving?
A single zone wine fridge holds one steady temperature, around 54 °F (12 °C): the reference setting for aging wine. A multi-zone wine fridge has at least two zones set independently, to bring each wine to its serving temperature. A dual zone wine fridge can do both: one zone for aging, one for serving.
Serving temperature guidelines
- Sparkling wines: 43 to 46 °F (6 to 8 °C)
- Whites and rosés: 46 to 54 °F (8 to 12 °C)
- Light reds: 54 to 57 °F (12 to 14 °C)
- Full-bodied reds: 61 to 64 °F (16 to 18 °C)
3. Built-in, panel-ready or freestanding?
A built-in wine fridge vents through the front and fits into cabinetry or under a counter; most can also stand on their own. A panel-ready wine fridge goes further: its door takes a panel that matches your kitchen. A freestanding wine fridge goes wherever you like, as long as you keep the clearances given in the installation guide.
For a built-in installation, measure the opening (width, height, depth) and the space the door needs to open. Our models come in standard inch widths: ask us for the exact dimensions before you order.
4. Where will it go?
Avoid placing it next to an oven, a heater or a sunny window. A room with a steady temperature makes the compressor's job easier. For a large model, check that the floor is level and that the packed unit can get through to the room.
5. The details that matter
- Shelves: sliding or fixed, with or without wood fronts.
- Door: glass to show your collection, or solid to protect bottles from light.
- Hinge side: right or left, depending on the space available.
- Number of zones: one for aging, two or more for serving.
